<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>Custom Website Design + CMS<\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>I was contracted by Dr. Molly Simon to design and build a responsive website for her teaching and research work at Arizona State University. The site provides a central location for her colleagues to learn about her work, while also hosting course material for her students. The site is equipped with a content management system that allows Dr. Simon to easily update the site text and images or add new projects and course materials without needing any knowledge of code or website building platforms. The site was designed to reflect Dr. Simon&#8217;s passion for planetary science and capture the ambience of space. ALICE allows researchers to review and update transcription data from projects such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribesofthecairogeniza.org\/\">Scribes of the Cairo Geneza<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.antislaverymanuscripts.org\/classify\">Anti-Slavery Manuscripts<\/a>. Using ALICE&#8217;s interface, researchers can view the collection of transcriptions made for each line of text in a document and choose which will be used for the final transcription, as well as view consensus percentages for each line. The main focus of my work on this project was on the data exports and model locking functionality, along with minor functionality such as sorting\/filtering and serializing transcriptions.<\/p>\n<div>Scope of work involved for the data exports functionality:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Generate a set of export files for a transcription when the transcription status changes to &#8220;approved&#8221; (when a transcription is approved, users are no longer allowed to make changes). Export files are created as temporary files, then uploaded to Blob Storage using Rails Active Storage.<\/li>\n<li>Files are removed from Blob Storage when transcription is changed from &#8220;approved&#8221; to another status, such as &#8220;in progress.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Add option to download export files by project, workflow, or transcription group. All relevant files are downloaded from Blob Storage into a temporary directory, zipped, and then made available to the client.<\/li>\n<li>Allow exporting only for users with editor or admin roles for the given project.<\/li>\n<li>See data exports code <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/zooniverse\/tove\/commit\/2b991e4e8799229c2a0c19ebcd291a99927e525e\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Model locking functionality was also implemented so that only one user at a time could edit a transcription. This prevents changes made by one user from being overwritten by another user who had the same transcription open at the same time. Scope of work for this functionality is as follows:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Add attributes to save the username of the user currently updating the transcription (&#8220;locked by&#8221; user) as well as a &#8220;lock timeout&#8221; timestamp, which is set by default to be 3 hours from the point when the transcription is initially locked<\/li>\n<li>Expose an API method to lock a transcription. This method gets called by the front-end whenever a user opens a transcription for editing, and only locks the transcription if the user has editor permission.<\/li>\n<li>Expose an API method to unlock a transcription. I oversaw the migration of all data from AWS to Azure, which involved moving over 73 million files in S3 over to Azure Blob Storage, and migrating 8 production databases from one provider to the other.<\/p>\n<div>S3 to Blob Storage scope of work:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a new Azure adapter in order for the Zooniverse API to communicate with Azure&#8217;s media services &#8211; the existing code around media storage was written using the adapter design pattern in order to make it easy to switch service providers without needing to change the code in every place where a media file is retrieved\/modified\/etc. An in-depth overview of the work involved can be viewed <a href=\"http:\/\/localhost\/wordpress\/portfolio-archive\/azure-media-adapter-for-zooniverse-platform\/\">here<\/a>, and the code for this feature can be viewed <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/zooniverse\/panoptes\/commit\/64b4207c057708fdb1d7198a8b1f82b8f71d153b\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Set up a canary deployment for staging and prod in kubernetes. These canary deployments have the app configured to use the azure adapter. API requests are directed to the canary deployment when a special header is set on the request, allowing dev users to test the new code and migrated media.<\/li>\n<li>Create storage locations in Azure Blob Storage that map directly to existing AWS storage locations.<\/li>\n<li>Copy media files from AWS S3 to newly created Azure storage locations using azcopy (Azure CLI utility).<\/li>\n<li>Test to confirm all files were copied successfully and that all media file operations work as expected with Azure (both rspec tests and manual testing). Deploy the changes to production.<\/li>\n<li>Update the Azure Front Door configuration to have Zooniverse&#8217;s user-friendly media URLs route to Azure Blob Storage containers instead of S3.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Postgres Database Migration scope of work:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Create new servers in Azure to host migrated databases. The Floating Forests team used Zooniverse&#8217;s platform to analyze Landsat satellite images with the help of hundreds of Zooniverse volunteers, thus gathering temperature data on multiple kelp forests across the world. With the completion of the data collection, the Visualization Tools app was built in order to help the researchers analyze and interpret the final datasets.<\/p>\n<p>As the lead back-end developer for the project, I created a new database on Zooniverse\u2019s PostgreSQL database server to store project data, loaded up the existing project data, and configured an Azure Functions app to connect to the database. The Azure Functions API endpoints allow data to be requested for a specific area of the map, specified by a latitude and longitude range. One of my favorite experiences was when I stayed at Rhiannon, a rural community located in the mountains of northern Ecuador. While staying with them, I shared my knowledge about building websites in exchange for learning about plant tending and permaculture practices. The community had hired a web developer to build their site for them 10 years back, but because they were no longer in contact with the initial developer, the weren&#8217;t able to make changes. I was able to show them how to navigate the WordPress interface, create new pages, rearrange their content, and upload new photos. In addition, I directed them on how to set up and work with a staging version of the site. The site is equipped with a simple content management system that allows Zean to update text and photos as well as add new items to the CV and Work sections of the site. By request, I built out the CMS to allow Zean to update the order of how the different parts of her CV are displayed on the site, so that the CV would always reflect her experience in order of importance.
